February Currently!

Yay! I am here today to link up for the February Currently!

Seriously about the name-calling business... it is ridiculous. My principal teaches sign language after school and apparently taught them some mean names (most likely to avoid confusion with other signs - since some are so close to each other)..... so not only is there verbal name-calling and meanness in my classroom, there is nonverbal too! I can't even pick up on it unless I am staring at their hands 24/7! Ahhh!!

And the Super Bowl just ended! I kind of wanted the Giants to win. They seemed like the little guys to me for some reason. And I love little guys!!

I am excited for this upcoming week because we are finally going to finish up our mock trial of Goldilocks, which I haven't even really mentioned on my blog yet! We read the book and discussed the courtroom and what happens when you go there. We have assigned parts - the attorneys for Goldilocks and the Bear Family are riled up and ready to go. Tomorrow we are going to work on the script. They have been BEGGING me to work on it, so I really hope it goes well tomorrow!

Go link up!!

  1. Oh my gosh, I know it was unintentional that your principal gave them the tools they need to insult each other, but it's so funny! How unfortunate!!

It's so hard to deal with things like that. I spend time talking about empathy and I try to lay it on thick, and we give each other praise for doing things well. I don't know if it helps...maybe a secret valentine thing where each kid has to secretly watch someone else and write them a letter about how great they are, with specific reasons? I don't know. It's sad that kids are mean.

    1. I know!!!! And my cousin Kelley spells her name the same way as you, and I have never even met another Kelley with the second E!!!! I think we have a weird connection!!

Also I just told my brother about this and he said he knows a ton of people with his same exact birthdate. And I was like, "Whatever!!!! It is cool!!" Haha!

  3. I agree with your 'thinking'! You should check out my Warm Fuzzies post. It's helped in the past...still too soon to tell for this year's class. =)

  4. There are so many great picture books that I love to use to create an atmosphere that helps with behaviors. One of my favorites is "Hooway for Wodney Wat."

  6. We talk about being nice to each ALL the time! It is so frustrating to have mean children. You keep praising them, lifting tthem up, and setting the positive example. Hopefully, it will rub off...
I wish I could knit. That is very cool!

  8. It is so hard to get motivated to do my grad school work too after teaching all day! I am still finishing an assignment that is due at midnight, but I am blog stalking instead of course!

  10. Ooh! Thanks I will be checking it out. I really didn't get into the book until half way through but it was pretty good. It was just hard for me to read because of the dialogue but I liked it!! :)
I wanna see the movie now!

  12. I liked the Matthew Broderick commercial too! I would think a reward incentive / punishment program like a red, yellow, green or sticker charts would help with the name calling. Taking a strong stand on these things has always worked for me.

  14. A few things...
    1. What is the title of the book you're reading?
    2. I am having the same issue with kiddos in my class! We started Class Dojo and it seems to be helping, but I dunno. They are BFF's one minute and angry the next. I have one in particular who thinks everyone is out to get him. He'll talk to them until he thinks he's going to get in trouble or they annoy him and then he will yell loudly "Leave me alone!" It's frustrating to say the least.
    3. I am SOOOOOO glad I'm not the only one who successfully avoided grad school work :)
    4. I guess I'm lucky mine are only mean to each other while talking (and not using sign language...yikes!)

    1. Haha! I love leaving long comments like that.

The book is called Always Running - La Vida Loca: Gang Days in L.A. The author is Luis J. Rodriguez. It was in the Young Adult nonfiction section of my library! It is very good and incredibly sad so far and I'm only on page 60 or something!
