I Have Strep :(

It is official - first-year teacher syndrome has hit me! I've had a cold on and off for a few weeks now, so today I finally went to the Minute Clinic at CVS and they said I have strep!

On Friday I was a mess. I was happy that I stayed awake all day. I was a bad teacher and substituted an Animal Babies video for math work stations. I was happy, though, when most of the kids wanted to do math stations and were mad about having to watch the video. I'm glad I'm doing something right academically that the kids look forward to! One of the second graders said I could take a nap and she'd watch the class, haha!

So just now, I wrote out my first set of sub plans and they are three pages long. That isn't crazy... right? I remember when I was a sub, I liked more detailed plans because then I knew exactly what to do at exactly what time.

I'm a little worried that my kids will lose it tomorrow or that I left something out!

Any words of advice for me as I leave my kiddos in the hands of another?

  1. Jill, Your kiddos will be fine! Please relax and take care of yourself. Your students will be so excited to see you when you come back! Make sure you take enough time off to get completely back to normal (or at least almost back to normal).

  2. That's awful! I feel your pain-I have had strep 4 times in the last 6 years. Camille is right-do not go back before you are ready-one time I went back too soon thinking I could handle it and not wanting my kids to keep having a sub and it was terrible-ended up going home in the middle of the day. Get lots of rest and I hope you feel better soon! (This will give you plenty of time to read blogs!)

  3. As a sub, 3 pages is fine. I was in a class that the teacher left about 6 pages lol.

I'd rather have detail than not anything at all!

I'm sure your kids will be fine and that the sub will do fine :)

Get well and enjoy reading teacher blogs :)

  4. Hi Jill:

It is better to rest now than to be sickER later. The kids will survive, and they will be glad when you are back.

Along with my plans, I always write a letter to my sixth graders for the sub to read aloud. I tell them to be respectful to the sub, and that I am so excited for them to show someone else what a terrific class they are... Then I throw in that the sub will leaving me a note with a summary of the day...

I hope you are better soon. Rest! (And read blogs in between naps!)

  5. I agree with Camille! Just take care and feel better soon--the kids will make it through just fine and it sounds like you have done everything possible to make it easy for the sub. Feel better soon!!!

  6. So sorry to hear you are sick! I, too, have been sick for the last 4 weeks. Take care of you. The kids will survive and it will be good for them to have another adult to listen to and respect.
    Take care of you!!

  8. Strep is no fun! Two years ago I had it three times in one school year! Your class will be fine. Just take care of yourself so your body can heal!
